Potboiler by AKA AI Girlfriend
The bulk of “Figure Eight” was recorded in 2015 on Lawrence Street in Halifax, just before my first psychotic break. The ending was added this year. You can hear when I broke a guitar string while recording. I pulled on the guitar string, and as it unwound, it made an interesting noise. If I could go back, I’d do things differently, make more thoughtful music, treat my friends better, etc. The results are mildly interesting from a character study perspective, otherwise, it’s pretty terrible music, right down to the AI pitch-shifted spoken word at the ending I added this year. I wish I could make something pretty, but this is all I’m capable of. If you like this, you should check out my song “What Would I Be Without You?” on Bandcamp or Spotify. It has the worst hook in pop music. Not so much what I’m saying, just how I’m saying it. I tried hard to make something sound relevant. I don’t really listen to modern pop. The monotone delivery. It’s half-hearted, and I sound bored, stoned. I recorded that one a few years ago while living at a boarding house in Crystal Beach, Ontario. Not my first choice of places to live. I was newly released from the hospital, and that’s where they put me. A lot of money coming from elsewhere owning beachfront properties and the locals didn’t seem nearly as well off. The food at this boarding house was inhumane. oatmeal for breakfast, toast for lunch, and spaghetti for dinner. Carbs and zero protein. Food was included in the cost of rent, leaving us no money to buy food. It was horrible. One of the staff would argue with tenants and say abusive things to them. This doesn’t seem real, but they used to make us repeat “I feel good, I feel fine, I feel this way all the time” before meals. I saw my first Lamborghini in Crystal Beach.
